This is a pretty neat game where you play as a Swat guy with an assault rifle basically cleansing the streets of countless armed thugs.
The game scrolls vertically ala’ Ikari Warriors and at first glance it looks a bit like a SEUCK built game, but this game predates that program by a couple of years. There are a few interesting points like how your two extra lives are represented by Swat guys that follow along behind you & the erratic enemy behaviour e.g. if you let go of the controls you’ll notice the baddies don’t always home in on your position but rather shuffle about the streets sometimes hurling a Molotov at their own feet…these guys quite possibly could be on something.
At times a beat cop will wander down the path on the left or right, and if you shoot him you lose points – it is a shame the thugs don’t attack these patrolmen as it would have added a touch of realism. At times there is a gunman on a rooftop sweeping part of the road with bullets that need to be given a wide berth as he can’t be dealt with, I suppose grenades are not standard issue for a Swat guy. At the end of the road you are confronted with a huge swarming gang that approaches from three directions and after that a lone thug emerges with a hostage to liberate or become collateral damage – either way you move onto the next level.
At the end of the day LA SWAT is a decent and fairly addictive twitch shooter that could have probably used a few more complications but as it stands I think it is worth a look.
The routine for keeping track of your reserve men was a bit unusual for this game but I have encountered more bizarre examples, anyway
Freeze at the title screen and POKE 7632,1 for infinite lives
If you play on an emulator I strongly recommend using Hoxs64 as the game seems to have issues on VICE
