POKEs for Arkanoid Preview with VICE Tuturial

You may or may not have known that before the official Commodore 64 version of Arkanoid by Imagine was released there was a quite different version in development by Lynsoft to be published by Firebird. Due to some legal wrangling between Atari & Taito this version never officially surfaced, you can read a little more about it here. This preview version was preserved in 2009 and you can snag yourself a copy here.

I would recommend playing it with the VICE emulator, the game supports Paddles which can be enabled from the game menu pressing F1. in VICE make sure the following things are set from ‘settings’, ‘mouse settings…’ (see pic below) then if the mouse is not working press ‘Alt+Q’ to enable mouse events. After everything is working, you can maximize the screen or press ‘Alt+D’ to go full screen and do the same again when you want to go back to a window.

If you don’t have the Action Replay CRT, just Google Action Replay v7.5 Professional (1989)(Datel).  If you are not sure what to do with it in VICE, click the ‘file’ menu, then ‘Attach CRT Image…’ point to where you saved the file, you need to extract it from the zip to select it.

After you see the Action Replay interface come up, click ‘file’ then Autostart disk/tape image…’ choose the ARKANOI-.T64, moderately firmly press the F3 key and the game should start up, if it doesn’t do a reset (Alt+R), click ‘file’ ‘Autostart’ again and just click on Attach button, then push F3 again.

When the game is up and running press ‘Alt+Z’ to invoke the Action Replay and it is straight forward from there – press ‘E’ to enter pokes, when your done typing them in press Enter again to go back to the menu & F7 to resume the game.

Now with all that out of the way, I present to you my POKEs for Arkanoid Preview

Keep Bat modifier after losing ball (Gun or Sticky Bat)

Always have gun after losing ball (these need be used in conjunction with the above POKEs to work)

Level Select
At the title menu screen, invoke the freezer & POKE

29379,x [x=0-50]

note: on round 39 the bat can’t move, so to skip it POKE 29379,39 – you have to do it at the starting menu, sorry. After round 51 you get unceremoniously dumped to BASIC.
